Digital Character Design

Students in this camp will explore how to design & render a character from the ground up. Everything will be covered in this camp! From ideation, sketching, inking to full rendering techniques, students will test their creativity and art making skills through the use of digital software. This camp is designed for the pure beginner digital artist who has an original character in their mind which is burning to get out! 
  • Learn how to use tools in SketchBook Pro
  • Demonstrate the fundamentals of character design and rendering. 
  • Complete an original character design.

Manga: Poses & Faces

Mastering drawing of your anime characters requires learning human proportions, muscles and how the body changes in different poses. We will focus on these techniques to develop a strong foundation for our characters so that they look life-like and proportional.  
  • Learn how to draw an anime figure in multiple poses
  • Explore drawing faces from the front, side and three-quarter view
  • Learn how your manga inspired  figures differ from a traditional figure drawing

Street Art: Galaxies

The street-art movement marked by artists around the world has placed graffiti on the map and grown to be an accepted creative outlet. In this camp, students will study graffiti as a base for making their own street-art paintings that are galaxy themed.. Students will work on large-scale wood panels using acrylic and spray paint. 
  • Learn how to use spray paint, acrylic paint, and Exacto knives
  • Experiment with techniques like soft mist, raised stencils, bounced paint and creating comets
  • Complete one large scale spray painting

Design Sprints

Students will work on a series of daily projects designed to walk them through the essentials of Adobe Photoshop. The class is for beginners to develop a foundational understanding of the program and discover unique skills to aid them in their future projects!

  • We will explore how to create a background extension, removing objects, masking, object glow, neon layers, and much more
  • Complete a series of unique, independent design pieces

One Artwork a Day

This art making adventure is the perfect way for teen artists to explore different paths within the fine arts. Over the course of a week, you will experiment with mini projects across drawing, sculpture, and painting. Every student will create one new piece of art for each day of camp attended.

Digital Grafitti

The recent street-art movement marked by artists like Banksy has placed graffiti on the map and grown to be an accepted creative outlet. In this camp, students will study graffiti as a base for making their own digital street-art paintings. Students will work in Adobe Photoshop to digitally draw and render street art, graffiti and lettering.
  • Learn how to use digital drawing and painting tools in Adobe Photoshop
  • Use specialty brushes in Photoshop that mimic real spray paint
  • Complete a series of digital artworks

Sketch Series

This drawing adventure is the perfect way for teens to explore sketching and learn techniques that they can take with them for all their future sketchbook adventures.   Each day we will focus on sketching a different subject and learn a new sketching technique.

Monster Clay Models

Monster Clay is an incredible oil based premium sculpting clay that is used by artists, animators and industrial designers to create sculpting miniatures and highly detailed figures and busts. The clay holds its shape extremely well and doesn't dry out allowing artists to create highly detailed figures with intricate textures.

Cosplay: Headware & Helmets

Cosplay, one of One River’s most popular camps, allows students to design and build a functional costume or prop using EVA foam.  For those new to this form of art, cosplaying is an activity where you dress as your favorite character from comics, film or TV. 
  • Learn how to cut, layer, glue and shape EVA foam
  • Focus on making props such as helmets, headdresses, masks, crowns, horns and more
  • This camp is often taken in conjunction with Cosplay: Shields & Swords

Summer Courses: Drawing from a Live Model*

Students in this Summer Course for grades 9-12 will cover overarching life-drawing skills/techniques which relate to understanding the human form through the essential foundations of anatomy, proportion, weight, balance & rendering realistically to enhance & advance their drawing skills with a human subject.
  • Gain experience rendering the human form realistically via proportions.
  • Demonstrate understanding of representation & observation.
  • Complete a series of figure drawings from a live model.

Summer Courses: Graphic Design and Visual Communication*

Visual communication is the practice of using visual elements to get a message across, inspire change, or evoke an emotion. This Summer Course for teens grades 9-12,  will focus on learning how to use graphic design to convey a powerful message through composition, color, layering and typography to accomplish their design. Students are expected to have a foundational understanding of Adobe Photoshop prior to joining this camp. We will also work in Adobe Illustrator, however, students are not expected to come to this course with Illustrator knowledge.
  • Gain further experience designing using vectors & pixel based imagery.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of visual identity and branding
  • Complete several high-level quality design-centric outcomes

Digital Manga: Scene Scensations

High on a mountain top…. or…. in the dark alley of a busy city? In this camp we will focus on developing a digital drawing of scenery of each student’s choice. We will explore how to draw both architectural elements in our scene, as well as more organic natural elements. 
  • Learn how to draw in Adobe Photoshop to create a scene
  • Explore tools like perspective wrap, vanishing point and content aware fill
  • Complete a digital illustration of a unique scene

Learn to Draw: People, Poses & Proportions

Students will gain the understanding of the human form and mechanics of the human body. They will study basic anatomy to further their ability to represent a figure in various poses.

Pen & Ink Illustration

Explore the field of illustration from a new frame of reference. Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge and proficiency with the pen and ink drawing medium. Students will learn about today’s illustrators and develop unique concepts of their own. 
  • Learn how to use micron pens and india ink
  • Demonstrate cross hatching, stippling and shading using pen and ink
  • Complete a series of three pen and ink drawings

Summer Courses: Animation: Character Performance*

Creating and animating characters is an incredible skill to master for any digital artist. In this Summer Course for teens grades 9-12, we will animate an original character by mastering their movement and emotions through animation techniques. Students are expected to have a basic understanding of the program Adobe: Animate. 
  • Gain  experience animating a character with dialogue 
  • Demonstrate understanding of the subtleties in body language and body movement
  • Complete a high-level quality and fully performative character monologue

Summer Courses: Painting Portraits: Acrylics*

Students in this Summer Course for teens grade 9-12,  will create an acrylic painting of a portrait of their choice. The will focus on essential foundations of color, value, texture, blending & rendering realistically to enhance & advance their skills with the acrylic medium.
  • Learn how to work with various additive mediums: Extender, Glazer, Flow Improver, and more.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of paint handling & color theory through blending
  • Complete a final high quality painting of a portrait.

iPad Painting: Recreating Masterpieces

Learn to paint on your iPad using Procreate. Students will recreate the work of a famous artist of their choice, with a twist! The challenge here will be to mimic the brushstrokes, color palette and tools replicating a traditional painting to a digital artwork.
  • Learn to use Procreate on an iPad
  • Learn how to use advanced brushes, download new brushes and create your own
  • Create a digital artwork that is inspired by a famous masterpiece.
*Students are required to provide their own iPad (with Apple Pencil/Stylus) and Procreate App in order to participate in this camp.

Cartooning & Novel Development

Aspiring cartoonists will get started on creating an original graphic novel in in this fun camp that will combine illustration, storytelling and humor in sequential art making. We will look at popular comic books and graphic novels for inspiration.
  • Learn how to create cartoon panels by focusing on size, format and line art 
  • Add humor to your story by emphasizing comic effect using verbal and visual wit
  • Use pencil, microns and illustration markers to create the first few pages of your graphic novel

If you want to take your social media content to the next level with video effects, this camp is for you! Students will learn a series of viral video techniques that allow them to create digital content that is engaging and of a professional quality.
  • Shoot footage on your mobile phone 
  • Add post production elements such as motion graphics, transition effects, cinemagraphs and more
  • Edit your footage using easy to use software to create unique video content
*A smartphone with a camera is required for this camp. This camp will focus on shooting and editing footage. Posting on social media should be done only with the consent of the parents / guardians after camp.

Digital Manga: Characters

Consistent in numerous Manga lore and stories, is the theme of characters with energy powers. Students will discover how to push their illustration skills further with Adobe Photoshop, through advanced lighting and filter effects, in order to produce a team of heroes and villains, clashing with supernatural abilities. During this camp, students will investigate the illustrated physics of energy beams, blasts, and other electric bursts, as well as the dynamic body positions necessary to produce these charges. 
  • Develop skills in Adobe Photoshop 
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to illustrate light and create dynamic effects
  • Complete an illustration of a unique manga character(s) with an energy theme.
*No prior experience in Adobe Photoshop is required to join this camp, however some Photoshop experience will be helpful when enrolled in this course.

Oil Painting Botanics

Students will begin their oil paint journey in this camp starting with preparatory skills such as brush orientation, to more advanced techniques like medium control. They will learn about color and paint application to create an oil painting.

  • Complete a series of oil paint experimentations and one finished painting

Portfolio Development is an intensive 2 week Summer Course for high school students grades 9-12 who are serious about digital design, illustration or animation and are preparing to concentrate in this field at the college and university level.

  • Receive guidance and feedback on your portfolio to help you secure acceptance to college digital programs

Retro Poster Painting

In this camp we will study the lifestyle, trends and art forms from the last 30 years and create a poster that is nostalgic of the past and embodies retro design elements. Students will learn how to create faux textures such as marbleizing, sponging, crackling, antiquing and color washing to give their poster painting a vintage look and feel.

Learn to paint on your iPad using Procreate. Students will create a portrait painting of someone notable, such as a celebrity or prominent figure that holds significance to them.

Concept Art for Gaming

Students in this camp will explore the relationship between concept art, artists and the gaming industry. Students will discover how to develop a series of concept illustrations, from which an entire game’s design can be inspired by. They will need to think critically about how to convey their vision of a character’s design, while providing & allowing optionality for game designers to work with. Excellent for portfolios!
  • Develop additional skills in Adobe Photoshop
  • Explore contemporary trends in concept art. 
  • Create a collection of concept character imagery for a potential game.
*Prior experience in Adobe Photoshop is encouraged prior to joining this camp. Students will find some Photoshop experience helpful when enrolled in this course.

Learn to Draw the Portrait

While being inspired by Chuck Close, students will be exploring the graphite medium and learn the foundations of drawing. Students will look closely at the human face to learn how to render it naturalistically, along with learning the proper facial proportions.
  • Learn how to use the graphite medium

  • Complete a realistic portrait drawing

Digital Manga Webtoons

Webtoons are a type of digital comic that originated in South Korea usually meant to be read on smartphones. They are formatted vertically, often featuring music or animations. In this camp each student will design their own webtoon, using an original story line and discover how to push their illustration skills further with Adobe Photoshop.

  • Experiment with webtoon formats for your comic

Street Art: Banksy Edition

Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based street artist who has been active since the 1990s. He creates satirical street art that combine humor with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. Banksy has helped place graffiti on the map and grown it to be an accepted creative outlet.
  • Learn how to use spray paint, acrylic paint, and Exacto knives
  • Master stenciling and wheat pasting techniques
  • Complete one large scale spray painting inspired by Banksy’s style

Students in this Summer Course for grades 9-12, will work with oil paints to learn how to manage this incredible painting medium to create a painting inspired by nature. We will cover overarching painting concepts which relate to understanding and developing skills around the essential foundations of color, value, texture, blending & rendering realistically to enhance & advance their skills with the oil medium.
  • Learn how to work with various oil additives: Linseed oil, thinners & varnishes
  • Demonstrate an understanding of paint handling & color theory through blending
  • Complete a series of studies and one final high-quality oil painting.

Summer Courses: Portfolio Wrap Up: Photo Your Artwork, Artist Statement & More *

This Summer Course for teens grades 9-12 is a wonderful way for students who are applying to art college or university within the next 9 months to complete their portfolio requirements and receive critical feedback on how to take their portfolio to the next level. This Summer Course will take place in the digital lab, allowing for students to complete the administrative requirements necessary for a complete portfolio.
  • Write your artist statement that supplements your portfolio work
  • Photograph your work and edit it digitally for high resolution images
  • Practice commonly asked questions during the college acceptance / portfolio review interview

Pour Painting

Flow art, also known as acrylic pour painting, is a form of abstract art that uses acrylic paints with a variety of consistencies to create different effects. Layers of paint are poured into a cup, which then react with each other when combined to create organic free-flowing abstract compositions. Students will learn about color theory, different texture creating techniques and how to prepare a canvas for flow painting.
  • Learn techniques such as “the bloom effect,” ribboning, flip-cup and dirty pour 
  • Experiment with paint mediums to create different textures and paint reactions
  • Complete a series of acrylic flow paintings that demonstrates new techniques you have learned

Tik Tok Art Trends

In this camp, we will make a different artwork each day, experimenting with today’s most popular art trends. These include pop art, pour painting, watercolor abstraction, zentangle and more.
  • Make a series of mini artworks
  • Experiment with new tools and mediums from drawing to painting
  • Take videos of your artwork as you make them
*Students who want to document the process of making their artworks must bring a smartphone to this camp. We will shoot footage of our artworks using time lapse.  Posting on social media should be done only with the consent of the parents / guardians after camp.

The Wynwood Art District Association was founded in early 2003 by a group of art dealers, artists and curators. This thriving neighborhood in Miami, Florida features over 200 murals painted by street artists from around the world. In this camp we will look at their art to be inspired for our own street art paintings   The recent street-art movement marked by artists like Banksy has placed graffiti on the map and grown to be an accepted creative outlet. Students will create a street art painting to convey a message after learning about the various impacts of public art. 
  • Learn how to use spray paint and acrylic paint in a larger scale
  • Demonstrate how to make custom stencils and various spray painting techniques.

Digital Animation: Character Performance

It is open to any skilled digital artist who wishes to take their animation techniques to the next level, while studying amongst other advanced peers. Students are expected to have a solid grasp of the foundations of the program Adobe: Animate, Character design and desire a dedicated camp designed to push them creatively & artistically to gain mastery over animating a character’s emotional performance.
  • Gain further experience animating a character during dialogue 
  • Demonstrate understanding of the subtleties in body language during dialogue based performances.
  • Complete a high-level quality and fully performative animated monologue
*Students enrolled in this camp must have experience in digital animation in Animate.

One Drawing a Day

This art-making adventure is the perfect way for young artists to explore different drawing paths within the fine arts. Over the course of 5 days, students will learn important fundamentals regarding drawing. Each camper will create 4 mini drawings to explore abstraction, symbolism & representation.
